POETRY
Vanquished

Ottava rima, an eight line verse of iambic pentameter (ABABABCC) in traditional form, has been used alternatively for heroic poems (“Don Juan”) or to mock or parody heroism. I tried to split the difference here, in form and content.
Vanquished
When Otto drew his pen—“Beware my glare!”—
From scabbard wore upon his shirted breast,
They did draw back, though in this affair
Less threat than awe from old O’s pose, they guessed.
The hero’s dead, rose not from wish or pray’r,
Words long rent from meaning, they suppressed.
And so, with gentle hands they guide, these fools,
His withered grip, disarmed, toward idler tools.
