Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand

19 June 2023

“A young artist’s retread of a lot of what was happening in absurdist theater in the decades which preceded it.”

More a curiosity than a satisfying read, I enjoyed the work mostly because (of course) of its worming into the head of a young Jim Henson and speculation into what his career might have been without Muppets.

Otherwise, this very fast read (more picture book than scripted work here) is a young artist’s retread of a lot of what was happening in absurdist theater in the decades which preceded it: a sole protagonist facing a world of increasing nonsense, a place where everyone seems to understand what is going on better than he is. A mishmash of genres, worlds, archetypes, and historical eras, the journey through its nonsense is amusing, but expect (as typical of the genre) no satisfying story resolution.

And, of course, we can easily see the roots of the more bizarre humorous moments in The Muppet Show and later years of his work!
