Art responds to art. Originally, the Greek term meant a length and vivid description of a particular object (a shield, an ocean morning); the words were meant to truly represent or imitate the object. Later, as other writers wrote in imitation of classical writers, the “imitation” idea evolved to respond, interpret, inhabit, confront, and speak to their subjects.
