The cinquain has many variations. This is a “Mirror Cinquain,” and the meter, too, is reversed across the two stanzas. The second form is the free verse version.

Education

And when
She leapt across
The ditch where paper boats
Of school reports swept down to dark
She learned

Bootslip
Pigtail, tooth, and tongue each taste it
Future fears to present
Muck and flotsam
Wisdom

Education

Believing
the rain
might scour clean,
wash away the shame
of her resistance

She launched
the school report
as paper boat
bearing its witness
        into dark sewer pipes

With rain comes mud

One boot slips and with it
dread falls to instant terror
more jetsam for the trench

muck
pigtail
tooth
and
tongue
